I DON'T KNOW if Karl Rove should be fired. But I do know that the Rove-Wilson-Plame-Novak incident offers proof of two things that we critics have been saying about the President for a long time: first, that George Bush is a man who cannot be taken be taken at his word; second, that this administration puts "gotcha" attacks against its perceived political enemies ahead of ANY other benetton oncern, even national security. Even without the connection to Rove, the story of the administration's response to Ambassador Joseph Wilson's debunking of the claims that Iraq had tried to acquire nuclear material in Niger was and is a disgusting spectacle. It appears never to have occurred to administration officials that Wilson was, as it turns out, correct in finding that Iraq had NOT been poking around Africa trying to purchase nuclear bomb making stuff. Instead of taking Wilson's findings seriously when considering its case for war against Iraq, the administration decided to launch a campaign of character assassination against Wilson by leaking to the press the suggestion that he was incompetent and that he was only assigned the job because of his wife's CIA connections.
